Abstract
This article is written from a presentation made at the National Sandplay Therapists of America Conference, Sacred Landscapes of the Psyche, held in 2022 in Redondo Beach, California, USA. It explores the concept of psychological transformation as a deepening journey through a perilous psychological landscape that can be rough and rocky, and filled with difficult to follow pathways and unpredictable weather storms. Often people begin therapy with a desire to change their lives, and have little awareness of the depth and complexity of the task they are about to undertake. Baum’s (1910) fairy tale The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and Buddhist images from The Ten Zen Oxherding pictures are explored as wisdom teachings that exemplify the challenges of the therapeutic process. References to Joseph Campbell’s hero’s journey are included, along with a brief mention of C. G. Jung’s reflections about the symbolism of alchemy as an archetypal underpinning for understanding the dynamics of the transformative process. A man’s sandplay process is included to demonstrate how the psyche circumambulates through challenging psychological terrain to transform and establish a soul connection with the Self.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Dieser Beitrag untersucht das Konzept der psychologischen Verwandlung als eine vertiefende Reise durch eine oft gefährliche psychologische Landschaft. Oft beginnen Menschen eine Therapie mit dem Wunsch, ihr Leben zu verändern, und haben wenig Bewusstsein für die Tiefe und Komplexität der Aufgabe, die sie angehen. Baums (1910) Märchen The Wonderful Wizard of Oz und die 10 Zen Buddhistischen Bilder der Ochsenhirtenserie werden als weise Lehren untersucht, die die Herausforderungen des therapeutischen Prozesses veranschaulichen.
