What is the Ethics Committee?

The Ethics Committee processes complaints about potential violations of the STA Standards for Professional Conduct. The Ethics Committee assesses alleged violations and recommends a course of action, always ensuring due process.

How do I file a complaint or ask a question?

Complaints or inquiries regarding potential violations of the STA Professional Standards by any of its members may be directed to Linda Cunningham, Chair of the Ethics Committee at ethics@sandplay.org or by phone: 415-346-6363.

How does the Ethics Committee assess an alleged violation?

“If a member of STA knows of a possible violation of STA standards for professional conduct by another member, they shall first informally attempt to resolve the issue by bringing it to the attention of the member in question if possible and appropriate. This is particularly appropriate in situations in which the issue appears to be a function of the lack of knowledge, sensitivity, or experience and may be resolved through informal discussion.

Potential violations that are not minor in nature or resolved through informal discussion with the member shall be brought by the STA member to the attention of the Ethics Committee in writing and signed. The Ethics Committee will review, process, and act upon the submission in accordance with STA policies and procedures.”

STA is cognizant of and sensitive to the issue of dual relationships. While dual relationships are generally discouraged, sometimes they are unavoidable. STA encourages CSTs and CST-Ts to use sensitivity, professionalism, and integrity at all times, and particularly when participating in a dual relationship.
