Abstract
C.G. Jung contended that the work of the ancient alchemists was a metaphor for the process of individuation, and that the four colors, black, white, yellow and red that the alchemists reported seeing in their vessels—termed after their Latin alchemical equivalents, nigredo, albedo, citrinitas and rubedo respectively—represented stages of psychological development. The psychological meaning of these four colors is explored in depth, with emphasis on the final stage—the coniunctio or Sacred Marriage of the white and the red as complementary pair. Corroboration for this pair is found worldwide and across time: in the Chinese concept of Yin and Yang, the Indian Tantric Yoga system of ida and pingala nadis, and in the physiology of the right and left hemispheres in the human brain. Additionally, four sand scenes, representative of the four color-stages during the healing journey of a woman in a long-term therapy, are analyzed.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: C.G. Jung behauptete, dass die Arbeit der Alchemisten eine Metapher für den Prozess der Individuation war und dass die vier Farben Schwarz, Weiß, Gelb und Rot, die die Alchemisten in ihren Gefäßen sahen—nach ihren lateinischen alchemistischen Äquivalenten Nigredo, Albedo, Citrinitas, und Rubedo genannt—Stadien der psychologischen Entwicklung repräsentierten. Die psychologische Bedeutung dieser vier Farben wird eingehend untersucht, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf der letzten Stufe liegt—der Coniunctio oder hermetischen Hochzeit des Weiß und des Rot als komplementäres Paar. Bestätigung für diese Paarung findet sich weltweit und im Verlauf der Zeit: im chinesischen Konzept von Yin und Yang, im indischen tantrischen Yogasystem von Ida und Pingala Nadis sowie in der Physiologie der rechten und linken Hemisphären im menschlichen Gehirn. RESUMO: C.G.
