Abstract
This article focuses on an adaptation that Dr. Dermott has developed in working with clients who have lost the use of their bodies in some way that renders impossible their direct work in the sand. He presents this adaptation, which he refers to as “Assisted Sandplay,” by describing its use in the sandplay process of a young woman with cerebral palsy. The author underscores the necessity of providing the “free and protected space” (Kalff, 1966/2020) of the sandplay experience to those clients with a physical or medical condition, which limits or prevents them from participating in sandplay therapy. With assistance, sandplay can restore or provide the individual’s ability to truly play in the freedom and protection that only occurs outside of ordinary life, bringing the potential for healing. Dr. Dermott believes that the experience that he gained through his relationships with clients who have benefited from assistance in their sandplay due to their physical disabilities has helped increase his ability to be in the “free and protected space” with his clients and when essential—“share my hands.”
