Abstract
This article stems from a presentation given by Janet Tatum at the 2024 STA National Conference in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It is a review of clinical content that John Hood-Williams—the director of the Lowenfeld Clinic following Margaret Lowenfeld's death and until his death in 1988—shared with the author about a case of a young boy, pointing out mounds that were followed by tunnels made in the sand tray. Drawings of clinical material from publications by Lowenfeld are shown, with kind permission from the Lowenfeld Trust, that are similar to the sandtrays done by the author’s client. A chronology, in part from the Philemon Foundation, of the early days of child psychotherapy is included. A lecture given by Lowenfeld to the British Psychoanalytic Society in London in 1938 leads to a discussion about the interconnections between the three women in the field of child psychotherapy at the time: Margaret Lowenfeld, Anna Freud, and Melanie Klein, with brief summaries of their theories. The article concludes with a clinical study of the author’s client. The comparisons with the Lowenfeld case drawings that are similar in content shows the universality of the work in the field and as seen in the case of another boy presented in conjunction with this material.

Zusammenfassung: Dieser Artikel basiert auf Janet Tatum’s Vortrag auf der Nationalen Sandspiel-Konferenz der STA 2024 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Es handelt sich um eine Überprüfung klinischer Inhalte, die John Hood-Williams, der nach dem Tod von Lowenfeld die Leitung ihrer Klinik bis zu seinem eigenen Tod 1988 übernahm, mit der Autorin über den Fall eines Jungen teilte. Er betonet Hügel die im Sandkasten gebaut wurden denen Tunnels folgten. Resumo: Este artigo é derivado de uma apresentação realizada por Janet Tatum na Conferência Nacional de Sandplay da STA, Santa Fé , Novo México, em 2024. Trata-se de uma revisão de conteúdo clínico que John Hood-Williams, diretor da clínica Lowenfeld após sua morte e até seu falecimento em 1988, compartilhou com a au tora sobre o caso de um menino, destacando montes seguidos por túneis feitos na caixa de areia. São apresentados desenhos de material clínico retirados de publicações de Lowenfeld, com permissão do Lowenfeld Trust, que são semelhantes às caixas de areia realizadas pelo cliente da autora. Uma cronologia dos primórdios da psicoterapia infantil, partialmente fornecida pela Philemon Foundation, é incluída. Uma palestra ministrada por Lowenfeld na Sociedade Britânica de Psicanálise em Londres, em 1938, leva a uma discussão sobre as interconexões entre três mulheres na área da psicoterapia infantil na época: Margaret Lowenfeld, Anna Freud e Melanie Klein, com breves resumos de suas teorias.
