Abstract
The author, Dr. Ignez Carvalho Hartmann, underscores that sandplay images are an expression of the connection between body and psyche. They are valuable instruments for the diagnosis and therapy of psychic and psychosomatic illnesses in clinical and educational contexts. The hands are creative mediators of the implicit memory from the preverbal phase. The observation of synchronous hand movements and facial expressions, i.e. the “language of the hands,” offers a new window to the understanding of the pre-symbolic level and offers new ways in sandplay therapy research. Children are still very close to experiencing the pre-verbal phase of life. As depicted fantasies, sandplay images resemble a “scenic condensate” (Bürgin, 2000), in which pre-verbal and pre-symbolic experiences crystallize through archaic, pictorial and metaphorical thinking. Traces of memory are often represented in the sand as a condensed expression of the pre-symbolic level of their history. Taking the pre-ego phase into account leads to a deeper understanding of symptoms. By expanding the symbolism to include the pre and perinatal phase in the intersubjective field of the sand tray, a new space of interpretation is created. The sensorimotor experience with the sand in the three-dimensionality of the sand tray activates implicitly stored preverbal episodes such as birth traumas that become visible as sand images. This article presents an example of a premature six-year-old girl’s expressions including sandplay images by which communicable memory traces of previous traumas can be understood.
