Abstract
This article explores Die Lehmgrube (The Clay Pit), the autobiographical account of Jungian analyst Ingrid Riedel, in which she reflects on her experiences as a ten-year-old child during the final years of World War II. Through memories, drawings, and later reflections, Riedel describes how a group of war-affected children transformed an abandoned clay pit into a space for imaginative play, healing, and renewal. Using clay, sand, water, storytelling, and miniature constructions, the children spontaneously created symbolic enactments of destruction, loss, rescue, mourning, and rebuilding. Their play bears remarkable similarities to processes observed in sandplay therapy, particularly the capacity of symbolic expression to contain trauma and foster resilience. The children’s repeated cycles of destruction and reconstruction enabled them to confront the realities of war while maintaining hope, creativity, and connection. Riedel’s narrative offers a powerful example of the psyche’s innate self-healing capacity and illustrates how creative play can support the integration of traumatic experiences. Her reflections provide valuable insights for sandplay therapists and others interested in trauma, symbolic process, and psychological transformation.
