Abstract
Selective mutism has been a growing issue for young children worldwide and is now categorized an anxiety disorders. These chindren‘s resistance to speaking or responding to any person outside of their own familial world of comfort is formidable. In this article the author observes important symbols and phases in a young girl’s sandplay therapy process. The author also considers the significance of silent witnessing as well as mutism in mythology. During the therapeutic process, the therapist’s silent holding and attentive presence contributed to the young girl‘s increased ego strength. She experienced a stable container in which she felt held. Her work in the sand gave her an avenue of expression and her positive transference gave the young client stable ground upon which to engage with her world.

Mutismus und Sanspieltherapie
ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Der Autor beschreibt die Sandspieltherapie eines jungen Mädchens mit selektivem Mutismus. Die Arbeit des Kindes im Sand gab ihr die Möglichkeit, sich auszudrücken, und ihre positive Übertragung gab ihr einen stabilen Grund, auf dem sie sich mit ihrer Welt auseinandersetzen konnte. Sie erlebte einen Container, in dem sie sich gehalten fühlen konnte. Der Autor betrachtet auch das stille Beobachten und den Mutismus in der griechischen Mythologie.
