Abstract
This is the case study of a middle-aged woman and her healing year-long journey through sandplay therapy. Repeated severe violations to her personal, psychological and physical integrity had profoundly affected her core sense of self. Twenty of her 26 sandplays present repetitive dynamic movement around a mandala-like central motif flanked by corner guardians, symbolic of Donald Kalsched’s archetypal defense of the Self. Through Fordham’s process of de-integration and reintegration—visible in the sand and in our work together—the client was able to overcome her defenses, access her personal trauma, integrate and transform intense shame, rage and self-hatred into images of wholeness and move back into the world with a greater sense of self. This journey to the Self through sandplay is a remarkable example of healing in the archetypal realm.

Heilung und Archetypische Abwehr des Selbst: Der Weg des Mandalas zur Ganzheit
ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Dies ist die Fallstudie einer Frau mittleren Alters und ihrer Heilung durch Sandspieltherapie. Wiederholte Verletzungen ihrer persönlichen, psychologischen und physischen Integrität hatten sie tief im Grunde des Selbst betroffen. Viele Ihrer Sandbilder stellen wiederholte, dynamische Bewegungen um ein Mandala Zentrum dar. Die Patientin konnte ihre Abwehr überwinden, sich ihrem persönliches Trauma stellen, es integrieren und die tiefe Scham, Wut und Selbsthaß in Bilder der Ganzheit umsetzen um dann zu einer Welt mit einem größeren Gefühle des Selbst zurückzufinden.
