Abstract
Adolescence is an important developmental phase during which the youngster strives to break away from parental identification and develop a new identity. This transition can be painful, and it can be seen as a time of death and rebirth. In this article, the author draws a parallel between initiation rituals as observed in primitive societies and the sandplay therapy process. The clinical case material illustrates archetypal patterns of initiation at work in a 12-year-old adolescent boy. In his therapy this boy went through the threefold movement of initiation: separating from the world of childhood, confrontation with death, and emergence of a new identity in the masculine realm.

Initiation Symbolism in Adolescent Sandplay Therapy
SAMENVATTING: Puberteit is een belangrijk fase in de menselijke ontwikkeling, waarin men probeert zich los te maken van indentificatie met de ouders en een nieuwe identiteit te krijgen. Deze fase kan pijnlijk zijn, en kan worden gezien als een periode van dood en herboren worden. In dit artikel trekt de schrijver een parallel tussen initiatierituelen in primitieve culturen en zandspeltherapie. Een casus illustreert de archetypische patronen van initiatie bij een jongen van twaalf jaar oud. Tijdens de therapie, heeft de jongen de drie fasen van initiatie beleefd: separatie van de kindertijd, confrontatie met de dood, en ontwikkeling van een nieuwe mannelijke identiteit.
