Abstract
This article explores the image of the wolf as ally in the sandplay processes of four individuals who struggled to heal from traumatic abuse. The wolf’s ability to communicate, connect with the instinctual collective, serves the group yet remains individual. Clinical vignettes show the use of wolves in the healing journey, as symbolic providers of protection and boundaries, communicators of pain and warning, and providers of belonging and community. One man incorporates the wolf in his search to integrate the more primitive aspect of himself as well as aspects of his anima. An adult female uses the wolf to give voice to her pain and set a boundary between herself and her destructive relationships with her siblings and past. Another woman is symbolically warned by the wolf’s howl to protect herself, and later is protected and honored by wolves. And a woman who grew up with no secure attachments finds the image of the wolf as teacher of connection and community.
