Abstract
Donald Kalsched’s approach to the interruptions caused by childhood trauma, the resulting defensive self-care systems, and their transformation are reflected upon. The basic structure and dynamic inherent in the self-care system are discussed, including how an attuned relationship with the psychotherapist or analyst, using symbol, and the mytho-poetic language of dreams, sandplays, stories, myths and fairy tales become necessary “tools” in helping trauma survivors reconnect with lost aspects of themselves.
