Abstract
A brief introduction to the nature of weaving, its metaphors and symbols, is offered. The famous weaving contest between the Greek goddess Athena and the mortal Arachne, as told in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, is re-imagined from the point of view of Arachne, who was turned into a spider by the enraged and envious Athena. Athena and Arachne form a pair of opposites. Athena is a well-armored father’s daughter who loves order and a life of the mind. On the other hand, Arachne has learned from the observation of the natural world and from working with her mother and grandmother, contained in a world of the goddess. A clinical example is included. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die Metaphern und Symbole des Webens werden kurz eingeführt. Der berühmte Webwettbewerb zwischen der griechischen Göttin Athena und der Sterblichen Arachne, wie in Ovids Metamorphosen beschrieben, wird in der Perspektive von Arachne, die von der eifersüchtigen Athena in eine Spinne verwandelt wurde, neuinterpretiert. Athena und Arachne sind ein Gegensatzpaar. Athena ist eine gut gepanzerte Tochter ihres Vaters, die Ordnung und das Leben des Geistes liebt. Arachne in der Welt der Göttinnen, lernte von Beobachtungen der natürlichen Welt und von der Arbeit mit Ihrer Mutter und Großmutter.
