Abstract
In the Penitente Brotherhood procession re-enacted each Spring in various towns in Northern New Mexico, there are two figures of death: Christ carrying the cross and Doña Sebastiana being pulled in her death cart. The representation of Christ contains the possibility that suffering can lead to resurrection. It is a symbol of connection to the divine. Doña Sebastiana is representative of the great mother earth which gives life, takes it back, and creates life again in an endless cycle. The client begins his sandplay process in a netherworld, hanging over a precipice between death and life. The twin symbols of Doña Sebastiana and Christ on the cross aid the client in his journey to choose life.

Doña Sebastiana: Tod und Verjüngung in der Sandspieltherapie
ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Doña Sebastiana stellt die Grosse Mutter Erde dar, die in einem endlosen Kreislauf Lebens schenkt, nimmt und wieder schafft. Ein Fallbeispiel wird vorgestellt in dem der Klient in einem Sandspielprozeß seine Gefühle zwischen Leben und Tod verarbeitet. Die Zwillingssymbole von Doña Sebastiana und Christus halfen dem Klienten in seiner Wahl zum Leben.
