Abstract
At the STA 2014 National Conference in Seattle, Sonu Shamdasani took us on a lively journey through the mysteries revealed in the The Red Book (Jung, 2009), focusing on Jung’s unfolding work with active imagination, his distinctive contribution to psychoanalysis. Leaving behind his emphasis on interpreting the image, Jung, in later life, moved toward the importance of prolonged contemplative immersion in the image. In this Reflection, we explore active imagination and sandplay, image and relationship, and the symbolic/clinical split in psychoanalysis. We may conclude that Sandplay is a form of active imagination according to Jung’s later practice of it, because it is “a lived-through symbolic process,” in which the image stands on its own, without the need for interpretation. Many consider active imagination to be our most powerful method, even more powerful than dreamwork, and as a form of active imagination, sandplay receives validation as the powerful depth method that we know it to be.

Sonu Shamdasani über Jungs Praxis des Bildes: Eine Gelebte Symbolische Erfahrung
ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Auf der Nationalen Sandspiel Konferenz der STA in Seattle 2014, nahm uns Sonu Shamdasani auf eine Reise durch die Mysterien des Roten Buchs (2009). Er konzentrierte sich auf die Entwicklung von Jungs aktiver Imagination und seine klaren Beiträge zur Psychoanalyse. Nachdem Jung in seinem späteren Leben die Hervorhebung der Interpretation des Bildes hinter sich ließ, betonte er die verlängerte, kontemplative Vertiefung in das Bild. In dieser Betrachtung erkunden wir aktive Imagination und Sandspiel, Bild und Beziehung, und die symbolisch/klinische Spaltung in der Psychoanalyse. Wir möchten schlußfolgern, daß Sandspiel eine Form der Aktiven Imagination ist, wie Jung es im späteren Leben ausgeführt hatte, denn es ist ein durchlebter symbolischer Prozeß in dem das Bild für sich selbst steht ohne nötige Interpretation.
