Abstract
The author discusses the use of figurines of the hand in sandplay. Sandplay therapists often speak of the importance of the hand as the instrument of creation in sandplay. We are also familiar with handprints that may be interpreted as a self symbol, ego strength, or, at minimum, newfound strength to lay claim to the space of the tray. Each of these is seen as healthy progress. The author gives a brief historical account of the hand’s significance to humankind and its early appearance in human art. Dr. Brock then shows how the image of a hand other than the client’s own, may lead to the interpretations above, and also to other inner states in the sandplayer. Among the other psychological states she describes are caring, longing, loss, grief, grabbing, reaching, holding, being held, dismemberment, re-membering, death, fear, aggression, love. Clinical examples from her sandplay practice are used to illustrate these states.
