Abstract
The quality of compassion is explored as necessary to the work of the Sandplay therapist. The author traces the history of the archetype of the Buddhist bodhisattva of compassion, Kwan Yin, as it moved from India to China and Japan, and how it has been central to her in the holding of Sandplay process. In a case example, a young girl, with a family history of trauma and addictions, uses several figures of Kwan Yin in her sandplay. These seem to reflect the movement of the therapy, and to hold the potential of transformation of the girl's ability to relate more positively with her family and friends.
