Abstract
The author recounts her memories and experiences as she first trained with Dora Kalff in Switzerland. Burt continued to study sandplay therapy when she joined a consultation group led by Harriet Friedman. A clinical example describes the therapy of a boy who was adopted. The image of a derailed train was a repeated image in his process. Throughout their work the therapist had seen this image as an expression of his early infant trauma and derailment of having been abruptly left by his birth mother. By the end of the therapy the client, now a teenager, built a scene in which the train was again derailed, however this time he straightened the train tracks. The author found that life events and this scene suggested that he was moving forward in his individual way. The article contains an introduction by Harriet S. Friedman.
