Abstract
The paper draws on myths and the behavior of real spiders to develop a psychological interpretation of the symbol of the spider. It examines the ways in which the spider in western culture carries the patriarchal negative projection onto women at the same time as leading us to the negative mother archetype. The paper follows the symbol of the spider as it appears and disappears in the sandplay processes and dreams of some women. It argues that the symbol of the spider offers an understanding of women’s relationship to the negative mother and the dark feminine within. It explores female arachnophobia, often experienced in the therapy room as a phobic inability to touch spider figurines. In tracing the presence and movement of the spider symbol in the sandplay process we may see the emergence of previously unknown or inexpressible, terrifying or unacceptable feelings replaced by the witch and less threatening representations of the dark feminine. An encounter with the spider may awaken a positive engagement with their creative many-sided feminine self.

Die Spinne: Begegnungen mit dem Dunklen Weiblichen
ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Dieser Artikel bezieht sich auf Mythen und das Verhalten von Spinnen und stellt eine psychologische Interpretation des Spinnensymbols vor. Diese Arbeit untersucht wie die Spinne in westliche Kulturen die negative patriarchale Projektion auf das weibliche trägt und wie sie uns zum negativen Mutterarchetyp führt. Das Spinnensymbol wird in verschiedenen Sandspielprozessen und Träumen von Frauen beobachtet und spricht dafür daß das Spinnensymbol oft ein größeres Verständnis der negativen Mutter und der inneren dunklen weiblichen Seite bietet.
