Abstract
This article introduces new ideas and nomenclature related to energies that are activated in the free and protected space of the sandplay environment. A summary of Bion’s basic psychoanalytic “waking dream thought” process leading towards a narrative derivative interpretation formulation is explained. A new parallel description viewing sandplay as a waking dream leads towards the concept of visual derivatives being created in the sand scene with a therapist. There is a linkage between Bion’s well established psychoanalytic concept and a new perspective of the energetic stimuli present in the foundation of sandplay therapy. New wording is used to describe the energetic stimuli activations that are made by the client, the figures on the shelves, the sandplay therapist, and the scene in the sand. Three clinical vignettes explain these concepts using the new nomenclature. Finally a NCRSS training experiment/experience is described that lends credibility to the concept of images hidden in the emotions. This experiment/experience can be replicated and the results can be compared.
