Abstract
With an introduction by Barbara Weller, this expanded version of Weinrib’s article discusses the rationale and practice of both Sandplay Therapy itself and that of delayed interpretation of Sandplay scenes. Differentiating working with sandplay scenes from dream interpretation in analysis, Weinrib identifies the therapist’s role as primarily being “to listen, observe and participate empathically.” Using Neumann’s framework, the author identifies the work of Sandplay operating on the matriarchal level of consciousness where healing occurs. Finally, the author identifies Sandplay Therapy as encouraging the constellation of the Self and leading to the development for a stronger ego through providing the free and protected space. Implications for the necessary knowledge and experiential base of the therapist are also included.
