Abstract
The author explores the African, grand matriarch elephant as a symbol of the Self in conjunction with the effects of the elephant’s work as a symbol in sandplay therapy with girls and women, in particular. The archetypal energies available in the co-transference for the sandplayer’s use in gathering elements of one’s own psyche into a healing journey are discussed as well. Clinical material is presented, including brief glances into 5 cases of (a) a 9-year-old girl with depression, resulting from the rejecting effects of a multigenerational pattern of emotionally cold and harsh parenting in her family of origin; (b) an 8-year-old girl suffering anxiety as she finds herself caught in the conflictual dynamic between her parents over drug and alcohol abuse; (c) a 12-year-old girl labeled and treated as “impossible” by her mother, who is fearing her daughter’s “defiance” as she approaches her teen years with a body just beginning to bloom; (d) a 27-year-old professional woman experiencing depression and bouts of uncontrollable crying as she struggles with partial memories of her beloved father physically assaulting her mother; and (e) a 59-year-old professional woman’s grief over her own childlessness. The image of the elephant shines through as a supportive, even at times, transformational symbol for these girls and women.

Der Grandiose Matriachale Elephant als Selbstsymbol in der Sandspieltherapie
ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die Autorin untersucht den grandiosen matriarchalen Elefanten als ein Symbol des Selbst im Zusammenhang mit den symbolischen Auswirkungen des Elefanten mit Mädchen und Frauen in der Sandspieltherapie. Fünf klinische Fallbeispiele werden gezeigt: Ein 9-jähres Mädchen mit Depressionen; ein 8-jähriges Mädchen mit Angstzuständen; ein 12-jähriges Mädchen das als »unmöglich« abgestempelt wird; eine 27-jährige Frau die unter Depressionen leidet und eine 59-jährige Frau die ihre Kinderlosigkeit betrauert. Das Bild des Elefanten erscheint als unterstützendes oft verwandelndes Symbol für diese Mädchen und Frauen.
