Abstract
Many aspects of the symbolic image of the monkey mirror forensic countertransference when working with violence where we often ask ourselves if the offender-patient can be trusted, or whether we may be at risk of being manipulated or even assaulted. Miniatures of monkeys used in forensic sandplay therapy are therefore an important symbol to investigate further and its use within one adult male offender-patient’s sandplay process, in a high secure setting in the UK, is explored here. Biological, psychological and mythological themes are explored, alongside a psychodynamic backdrop; considering the transference and countertransference when working with those who are traumatized and those who have terrorized. By following the symbolic image of the monkey this paper examines a forensic change-process of an arrest-confrontation-surrender-transformation; improving behavioral control, increased affect regulation, developing healthier non-offending relationships and a more authentic self.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Viele Aspekte des symbolischen Bildes des Affen spiegeln die forensische Gegenübertragung wider. Miniaturen von Affen, die in der forensischen Sandspieltherapie verwendet werden, sind daher ein wichtiges Symbol für weitere Untersuchungen. Seine Verwendung innerhalb eines Sandspielprozesses mit einem erwachsenen männlichen Tätern-Patienten in einer hochsicheren Strafanstalt in Großbritannien wird untersucht.
