Abstract
The author presents an illustrated long-term sandplay process with an initially self-harming, highly anxious and fearful 4-year-old girl. The author argues for the integrative benefits of slow, repetitive sessions that tolerate long periods of destructive, messy, and wild play. The value of the therapist modelling consistent therapeutic boundaries, maintaining a strong alliance with the primary caregiver and embodying hope at difficult times is described. The therapeutic process begins in chaos and distress, a little girl “beside herself,” and culminates, after 90 sessions, including 65 sandtrays over almost 3 years, in the development of a functioning ego-Self axis represented in the final sandplay pictures.

La autora defiende los beneficios integradores de las sesiones lentas y repetitivas que toleran largos periodos de juego destructivo, desordenado y salvaje. Se describe el valor de que el terapeuta modele límites terapéuticos coherentes, mantenga una alianza sólida con el cuidador principal y encarne la esperanza en los momentos difíciles. El proceso terapéutico comienza en el caos y la angustia, una niña "fuera de sí", y culmina, después de 90 sesiones, incluyendo 65 juegos de arena a lo largo de casi tres años, en el desarrollo de un eje Yo-Yo funcional representado en las imágenes finales del juego de arena.
