Abstract
It has long been my contention that working with dreams and working with sandplay requires a somewhat different emphasis in our knowledge base of our Jungian heritage. The dream with its narrative structure needs us to have a knowledge, understanding and appreciation of mythology. The transformation of the psyche by creating images that continually undergo transformation from sand world to sand world requires an understanding and appreciation of alchemy. Beginning with a short guided imagery we will explore how destruction and creation are essential to the alchemical opus. This will be further illustrated by looking at two alchemical series, the Rosarium and the Splendor Solis, both central to our Jungian heritage. In sandplay destruction and creation too play a crucial role as will be seen in two vignettes. Finally we will see how the ego needs to let go of its centricity by integration of the shadow and being in relationship with the Self and the numinous. These processes can be profoundly painful and humbling, but are crucial in our continual struggle towards wholeness.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Im Sandspiel spielen Zerstörung und Schöpfung eine entscheidende Rolle, wie in zwei Vignetten zu sehen ist. Schließlich sehen wir, wie das Ego seine Zentralität aufgeben muss, indem es den Schatten integriert und in Beziehung zum Selbst und dem Numinosen steht. Diese Prozesse können zutiefst schmerzhaft und demütigend sein, sind aber in unserem ständigen Kampf zur Ganzheit von entscheidender Bedeutung.
