Abstract
In this paper the author explores the sandplay scenes and dreams of a 9-year-old boy whose mother died 3 months prior to beginning therapy. This case serves to illustrate the activation of the archetypal image of the orphan clinically and symbolically. The article explores this image as a meeting point for the archetype of the abandoned child and that of the divine child. The author discusses how, for this child patient, the temenos of the sand tray—as well as the co-transference—facilitated an inner alchemical transformation where unbearable pain led to growth and development. The 9-year-old child’s process involved a deep process of mourning the loss of his mother. Eventually the child was able to maintain an inner soulful connection to the mother and to celebrate her life.

Am Scheideweg von Tod und Leben: Trauer, Bestimmung und der Waisen-Archetyp
ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: In diesem Artikel untersucht der Autor die Sandspielszenen und Träume eines neunjährigen Jungen, dessen Mutter drei Monate vor Beginn der Therapie starb. Dieser Fall dient dazu, das archetypische Bild des Waisenkinds klinisch und symbolisch zu veranschaulichen. Dr. Bortz erörtert, wie bei diesem kindlichen Patienten der Temenos des Sandkastens sowie die Co-Übertragung eine innere Transformation ermöglichten, bei der unerträgliche Schmerzen zu Wachstum und Entwicklung führten. Der Prozess des neunjährigen Kindes beinhaltete einen tiefen Prozess der Trauer über den Verlust seiner Mutter. Schließlich gelang es dem Kind, eine innere Verbindung zur Mutter aufrechtzuerhalten und ihr Leben zu feiern.

RESUMEN: En este trabajo el autor explora las escenas de juegos de arena y los sueños de un niño de nueve años cuya madre murió tres meses antes de comenzar la terapia. Este caso servirá para ilustrar clínica y simbólicamente la imagen arquetípica del huérfano. El Dr. Bortz analiza cómo, para este paciente infantil, el temenos de la bandeja de arena, así como la cotransferencia, facilitaron una transformación interior en la que el dolor insoportable condujo al crecimiento y al desarrollo. El proceso del niño de nueve años implicó un profundo proceso de duelo por la pérdida de su madre. Finalmente, el niño pudo mantener una conexión interior con la madre y celebrar su vida.

RÉSUMÉ: Dans cet article, l'auteur explore les scènes de jeu de sable et les rêves d'un garçon de neuf ans dont la mère est décédée trois mois avant le début de la thérapie. Ce cas servira à illustrer l'image archétypale de l'orphelin d'un point de vue clinique et symbolique. Dr Bortz explique comment, pour cet enfant patient, le temenos du bac à sable ainsi que le co-transfert ont facilité une transformation intérieure où une douleur insupportable a conduit à la croissance et au développement. Le processus de l'enfant de neuf ans impliquait un profond processus de deuil de sa mère. Finalement, l'enfant a pu maintenir un lien intérieur avec sa mère et célébrer sa vie.

RESUMO: Neste artigo, o autor explora as cenas de sandplay e os sonhos de um menino de nove anos cuja mãe morreu três meses antes de iniciar a terapia. Este caso servirá para ilustrar clínica e simbolicamente a imagem arquetípica do órfão. Dr. Bortz discute como, para este paciente infantil, os temenos da caixa de areia, bem como a co-transferência, facilitaram uma transformação interior onde a dor insuportável levou ao crescimento e desenvolvimento.
