ABSTRACT: In this article the therapeutic process of inner maturation and growth and the consequent need to shed what no longer serves the self is likened to the process of a snake shedding its skin. Reflecting on the sandplay processes of three women, the author offers perspectives on the shed skin of the snake as a symbol and also on the process of psychological shedding that takes place in the course of therapy. These clients’ presenting problems included depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, traumatic loss and lack of “good enough” parenting.
