Abstract
This paper explores the symbolism and nature of the wet and dry sand as well as the use of the 2 trays in one sandplay therapy session. The author considers the meaning of water in the wet tray and its significance in sandplay therapy. A clinical example of a 5-year-old child is used to demonstrate processes of progression and regression as well as integration and deintegration as movements of psychic energy seen in the use of the 2 sandtrays. Use of one of the sandtrays as a threshold and holding repressed and unmet elements of this child’s psyche is shown and discussed. Furthermore, the article explores how connection and splitting can be expressed in 2 sandtrays.
