Abstract

This article is part of a presentation given to the American Orthopsychiatric Association in 1995. The suggestion is made of the need for openness to the ethnic diversity of those we serve as psychotherapists. Sandplay therapy offers an approach for the Asian American to experience safety from judgment and misunderstanding in the intercultural exchange of the therapeutic relationship. In the silence of the sandplay, inner experiences can be communicated. Various cultural differences are explained in the therapeutic relationship. Information given helps all readers to be more sensitive to the therapeutic needs of this population.
