Abstract
This paper is about the sandplay therapy of a 4-year-old boy, in which the symbolic image of the volcano is examined and evidences itself as a part of his healing process. Attachment, aggression, behavioral issues, and defenses are seen through a young boy’s internalized anger and rage. The volcano as symbolic image encompasses attachment, bonding, neglect, as reflected in the constellated behavior of aggression toward others. Like deep subterranean movements, major life changes can cause deep psychic and visceral subducting disruptions that have the potential to shift one’s defensive structuring. Defenses reflect the health or defensive blocks within the “volcanic human psyche.” The volcano as symbol contains the transformative spark of fire that can initiate change, regenerate and transform. The author discusses the symbolic relation of the volcano to historical, archeological, and cross-cultural roots that trace back to the formation of the planet.
