Abstract

In this interview Martin Kalff, a founding member of the International Society for Sandplay Therapy, discusses his vision of sandplay, its roots, the creative implications of its expansion into many countries and cultures, and what he sees as the essentials of training. Sandplay is influenced and supported by research in neuroscience, and Kalff encourages continuing research within sandplay to further validate its usefulness, particularly with trauma. He also encourages the use of other techniques and approaches along with sandplay, and indicates treatments that incorporate attention to the body. There is an exploration of the spiritual dimension of sandplay, particularly the experience of the Self. Kalff also discusses an innovative approach to supervision, using art and movement, which he is developing.
