Abstract
This symbol of strength and perseverance is seen in the process of a boy’s journey of heroism. The Superman myth holds the essence of the hero’s journey of departure, initiation, and transfiguration as described by Joseph Campbell. The letting down of the identity of one’s disguise, such as Clark Kent in the Superman myth, reminds the reader of the journey to individuation. The case described is that of a 12-year-old boy who discovers the hero archetype within himself to understand his adoption and reception into a new family, much like Superman’s story. After 12 months of therapy, he is ready to handle what new horizons his life held for him.
