Abstract
The author explores the symbolic image of the starfish through the clinical material of a woman in her mid-30s who sought therapy at an unsettling phase of her life when she found herself to be overwhelmed as she was moving in multiple professional directions. The client was also dealing with confusing sexual identity questions. During her sandplay therapy the starfish became an important symbol that accompanied her through her sandplay process and as she found her individual way in everyday life. Five-armed starfish are unique in their multiple symbolic meanings, derived first and foremost from their biological characteristics, which may symbolically assist psychic transformation: regeneration (self-healing and rebirth), ecological regulation (self-balance) and hermaphroditism (uniting the opposites). No less significant is the symbolism of their shape, a five-pointed star, bearing multiple meanings within itself as a pentagram (bodily image), the number 5 (quintessence) and a celestial star (guidance and numinosity). The alchemists often saw it as the lapis philosophorum—a symbol of the Self.

תקציר: הכותבת חוקרת את הדימוי הסימבולי של כוכב הים באמצעות תיאור מקרה של אישה בעשור הרביעי לחייה, אשר הגיעה לטיפול בתקופה של אי-נחת והצפה ריגשית, בה חיפשה את דרכה המקצועית מתוך תחומים שונים שפנתה אליהם. בנוסף לכך עלו אצלה שאלות של זהות מינית. סימבול כוכב הים ליווה אותה באופן משמעותי במשך הטיפול במשחק בחול, תוך שהיא מנווטת את דרכה האישית בחיי היום יום. כוכבי-ים בעלי חמש זרועות הינם ייחודיים בריבוי המשמעויות הסימבוליות שהם נושאים, אשר עשויות לסייע ביצירת שינוי מיטיב של הנפש. בראש ובראשונה יש משמעות לתכונותיהם הביולוגיות: רגנרציה (ריפוי-עצמי ולידה מחדש), וויסות אקולוגי (איזון עצמי) ודו-מיניות (אחדות הניגודים). חשובה באותה מידה המשמעות של צורתם, הכוכב המחומש, אשר הינו מרובה-משמעויות בפני עצמו כפנטגרם (דימוי גוף), כמספר חמש (הקווינטאסנס) וככוכב שמיימי (מורה-הדרך, ביטוי של נומינוזיות). האלכימאים ראו בו את הלאפיס פילוסופורום – סמל הסלף.

Das Symbol des Seesterns und Seine Vielfältigen Bedeutungen in der Sandspieltherapie
ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die Autorin untersucht das symbolische Bild des Seesterns anhand des klinischen Materials einer Frau Mitte dreißig, die in einer beunruhigenden Phase ihres Lebens Therapie aufsuchte, weil sie sich überfordert fühlte in der Wahl zwischen mehreren beruflichen Richtungen. Die Klientin befasste sich auch mit Fragen zur sexuellen Identität. Der Seestern wurde zu einem wichtigen Symbol, das sie durch ihren Sandspielprozess und ihren individuellen Weg im Alltag begleitete.

RESUMEN: La autora explora la imagen simbólica de la estrella de mar a través del material clínico de una mujer de treinta y tantos años que acudió a terapia en una fase inquietante de su vida en la que se encontraba desbordada al moverse en múltiples direcciones profesionales. La clienta también se enfrentaba a cuestiones de identidad sexual. La estrella de mar se convirtió en un símbolo importante que la acompañó en su proceso de sandplay y en su búsqueda de su camino individual en la vida cotidiana. Los múltiples significados simbólicos de la estrella de mar se derivan en primer lugar de sus características biológicas, que pueden ayudar simbólicamente a la transformación psíquica: regeneración (autocuración y renacimiento), regulación ecológica (autoequilibrio) y hermafroditismo (unión de los opuestos). No menos significativo es el simbolismo de su forma, una estrella de cinco puntas, con múltiples significados: pentagrama (imagen corporal), el número cinco (quintaesencia) y estrella celeste (guía y numinosidad). Los alquimistas la consideraban a menudo el lapis philosophorum, símbolo del Ser.

L'Étoile de Mer comme Symbole et Ses Multiples Significations dans la Thérapie de Sandplay
RÉSUMÉ: L'auteur explore l'image symbolique de l'étoile de mer à travers le matériel clinique d'une femme d'une trentaine d'années qui a consulté un thérapeute à une phase troublante de sa vie, alors qu'elle se sentait dépassée par les multiples orientations professionnelles qu'elle suivait. La cliente était également confrontée à des questions d'identité sexuelle. L'étoile de mer est devenue un symbole important qui l'a accompagnée tout au long de son processus de sandplay et alors qu'elle trouvait sa voie individuelle dans la vie quotidienne. Les multiples significations symboliques de l'étoile de mer découlent avant tout de ses caractéristiques biologiques, qui peuvent aider symboliquement à la transformation psychique : régénération (auto-guérison et renaissance), régulation écologique (auto-équilibre) et hermaphrodisme (union des contraires). Non moins significatif est le symbolisme de leur forme, une étoile à cinq branches, aux significations multiples: pentagramme (image corporelle), chiffre cinq (quintessence) et étoile céleste (guidance et numinosité). Les alchimistes y ont souvent vu le lapis philosophorum, symbole du Soi.
