Imagination in Sandplay

Abstract

This article traces the importance of the imagination and its route into the arena of sandplay. In considering the emergence of imagination in Jung’s early work the link is made to philosophy and thus an introduction is made to the work of the philosopher Richard Kearney, who describes the fate of the imagination within the trajectory of Western thought. In accepting his proposal of the ‘founding’ myths in the story of imagination, the author makes certain considerations with regard to the responsibility one has as a sandplay therapist whose work is concerned with images and their psychological relevance.
