ABSTRACT: This article represents a plenary session from Sacred Landscapes of the Psyche— National Conference of Sandplay Therapists of America, Redondo Beach, California, 2022. The author points out that silence is key to the work of sandplay therapists and refers to “being with the patient,” “being to being” and the “practice of being.” In silence, human connection and love can arise and healing may occur. Dr. Chiaia speaks of love as the ability to empathize, understand and also discusses its importance in the relational field. What happens in the silent relationship of sandplay enables the numinous and the ineffable to emerge. Dr. Chiaia presents clinical material from patients who went through a process of healing, transformation and growth and for whom identity arose out of being. The author wrote that silence, presence and being were shared relationally both verbally and nonverbally, and out of that love could arise.
