ABSTRACT: In the context of an email conversation between Maria Kendler and Mark Bortz, Mark interviews Maria Kendler (2020). Their dialogue begins with Maria’s personal journey into sandplay, she also presents unique ideas, her approach to sandplay, and working with the other. Mark Bortz and Maria Kendler explore two important feminine deities who capture spirit and matter. Maria stresses the experience of the archetype for clinical work. When talking about how central touching the sand is in sandplay she stresses the “experience.“ They talk about a complex case about which Maria wrote in “Taming the Beast: Transformation of the Negative Masculine in a Woman’s Sandplay Process” (Journal of Sandplay Therapy, 2013) focusing on the relationship of the client and therapist and at the integration of many opposites. Finally, the interviewer and interviewee talk about another article of Maria’s “Must Theseus Kill the Minotaur? Coping with Destructive Aggressiveness in Sandplay Therapy” (Journal of Sandplay Therapy, 2017); they focus on the title of this paper and explore how the hero and the shadow are part of everyone and of every collective.
