ABSTRACT: The author discusses Wilfred Bion’s theory of symbol formation in relation to sandplay, using as illustration the case of a ten-year old girl’s unconscious processing of anticipatory grief over the loss of her mother to cancer. The article explores how Bion’s theory provides a theoretical rationale for thinking about the fundamental elements of sandplay – the sand tray, sand, water, the collection and the therapist – as a unified whole in symbol formation and supports Kalffian thinking about the importance of delayed interpretation in the symbolic process.
