ABSTRACT: The author explores the use of the Yemoja figurine in sandplay therapy. The three female patients described in this article shared a history of family trauma and challenges facing death. All three clients used Yemoja figures when revisiting death and grief in their sandplay scenes. The image of Yemoja helped them relate to deeper layers of their psyches. A client who had been depressed was able to experience descent, containment and eventual emergence. Another became more able to face her overwhelming rage which was transformed into ego-strength. However, another client was not able to experience a complete process; she left therapy due to escalating physical symptoms. Also included in this article is amplification material in the form of stories, myths associated with the originally Yoruba goddess Yemoja (also known in Brazil as Iemanja) in both the Umbanda and Candomble religions as well as other contexts; syncretism is discussed. The importance of Our Lady of Aparecida in Brazilian culture is briefly discussed. pp. 59-71

ABSTRACT: Die Autorin untersucht die Verwendung der Yemoja-Figur in der Sandspieltherapie von drei Frauen. Die in diesem Artikel beschriebenen Patientinnen haben alle eine Vorgeschichte von Familientraumata und Herausforderungen dem Tod gegenüberzustehen.
