ABSTRACT: This article comments on the documentary film “The Legacy of Margaret Lowenfeld.” It offers an overview of the early literature in the field as researched by Clare Thompson, including that of Buhler, Erikson, Lowenfeld, Eichkoff, Bowyer/Pickford, Kalff and Stewart, along with the history of Lowenfeld and Kalff by Mitchell and Friedman. It reflects upon Kalff’s connection to the Lowenfeld Clinic and describes the continuing work of John Hood-Williams, whom the author knew. The author comments on the various forms of therapeutic interventions at Lownefeld’s clinic, the Mosaics kit, the water room and the sand tray room for making worlds, hence the World Technique. The author points out the differences and similarities between the work of Lowenfeld and that of Kalff as also differentiated by Bradway and McCoard. The importance of the use of the “green apron” by staff at the Lowenfeld clinic is conveyed and linked to a photograph of Jung wearing his apron at his retreat in Bollingen (ARAS). The author ends with commentary from Lowenfeld that links her work to the later free and protected space of Kalff, illustrating the similarities of these early pioneers and its connection to the work of clinicians today.
