ABSTRACT: The purpose of this article is to examine the myths, archetypes and the sandplay stories of some of our male clients as we seek a deeper understanding of what boys and men may need therapeutically to more effectively deal with aggressive tendencies and other challenges they face as a gender. The author discusses the process of initiation as essential for all people, regardless of gender and especially in this modern era where we often find ourselves cut off from our communities or our families. To envision all stories and all symbols as containers and aspects of both masculine and feminine, shadow and light, presents us with the opportunity to expand our therapeutic understanding. Neither masculine nor feminine energy is seen as superior or greater than the other; the interaction of both is essential. Included is clinical material about of two young men.
