C. G. Jung describes the individuation journey as the process of becoming who we are meant to be. This movement toward wholeness of personality occurs through successive encounters with parts of us that lie hidden in the unconscious. People may be thrust into individuation by serious upheavals in their lives, or may naturally enter the process during midlife. Dora Kalff (founder of Sandplay Therapy) noticed that in the “free and protected space” of sandplay people naturally find symptom relief and move toward wholeness as describe by Jung.

Sandplay therapists are challenged to recognize how therapeutic change unfolds over the course of treatment in a series of sand scenes. The Seven Phases of Sandplay Therapy (Freedle, 2006, 2007) provide a roadmap and useful framework for tracking psychological development and the individuation journey in symbols and sand. This workshop will explore the research base and practical applications of the Seven Phases of Sandplay Therapy in clinical sandplay practice.

Learning Objectives:

1. Define Jung’s individuation process and three terms associated with Jungian personality theory.
2. List the Seven Phases of Sandplay Therapy.
3. Describe two characteristics of each phase that may appear in clinical practice and sandplay therapy.
