Educational Objectives: To begin to become familiar with alchemy as a symbolic system; to be able to use the symbology of the alchemical colors of black, white and red to understand sandplay and dreams; to understand the importance of having balanced energies in the psyche.
Learning Objectives:
- List the three alchemical colors.
- Describe the psychological meaning of each of the three alchemical colors.
- Define the coniunctio, or psychological wholeness, in terms of the alchemical colors
- Give an example of how you might balance your own masculine and feminine energies
- Discuss three ways the nigredo might appear in a sand tray
- Describe two ways the albedo might appear in a sand tray
Lynne L. Ehlers, Ph.D., is a licensed Clinical Psychologist and Teaching Member (CST-T) of ISST/STA with a private practice in Albany, California where she offers sandplay, dreamwork, case consultation and Jungian-oriented depth psychotherapy for adults. She has worked with sandplay since 1977. For many years she has taught classes on dream symbolism and sandplay at local universities and presented papers at sandplay conferences biennially since 2009 . Her many articles, on Kali, the Scarab, The Pearl of Great Price, Written in the Sand, Archetypal Defenses of the Self, etc., appear in the Journal of Sandplay Therapy. Her chapter on “The Tao of Sandplay Therapy” appears in Into the Heart of Sandplay (2018) and she is the author of Alchemy and Individuation: The Colors of Transformation, (2022) Analytical Psychology Press.
This course meets qualifications for 6 hours of education credit toward certification for Sandplay Therapists of America / International Society of Sandplay Therapists (STA/ISST).
