Pre-Sandplay refers to play therapy and sensory interventions designed to strengthen
ego functioning for children with attachment issues who sometimes react to Sandplay
with avoidance, trepidation, or fear. Developed by Scottish Sandplay therapist and
attachment specialist Agnes Bayley, Pre-Sandplay interventions help to secure trust,
strengthen therapeutic containment, and reawaken inhibited sensory experience. For
clients with insecure or ambivalent attachment, Pre-Sandplay interventions can help to
establish trust and “strong enough” ego functioning to allow for meaningful
engagement in Sandplay therapy.

Part 1 introduces the interventions of the Confidentiality Box, Feelings Box, and
Sensory Baskets, relating them to themes of therapeutic containment and sensory
exploration in Sandplay.
