Brief description of the event and objectives:
Session 1 – Placing Sandplay within the Evolutionary Arc of Trauma Theory, presents an historical overview of trauma theory and treatment beginning with early studies of hysteria, followed by decades of war-focused studies culminating in recognition of PTSD as a formal diagnosis, a renewed focus on trauma experienced by women and children, and in more recent decades, the profound impact of neuropsychological research on our understanding of what happens on many levels when people experience trauma. When, where, and how treatment approaches related to Sandplay, in particular the Lowenfeld World Technique, Kalffian Sandplay, and “Pre-Sandplay” interventions developed by Agnes Bayley, fit within this evolutionary arc will be examined. Also included will be reflections on why Sandplay is a helpful and effective treatment approach for those who have experienced significant trauma, shared by guest presenter Dr. Bert Meltzer, ISST Teaching Member from Israel.
