Miniature, Myth, and Meaning – On the Therapeutic Potency of Little Things
Presenters: Betty Jackson, LMSW, CST-T in collaboration with Ruth Castellano, MA, RSP, LPC
When: Saturday, May 15th, 2021; 9:00 AM – 12:15 PM EDT
Brief description of the event and objectives:
Miniature figures seem by far the most compelling of the tools used in Sandplay therapy, but what exactly accounts for the appeal and therapeutic potency of such tiny, diminutive things? Why are we so captivated by all these little figures in the collection? For insight into these questions, this webinar investigates the theme of miniature in myths and fairy tales across time and culture, elucidating the universal archetype of the tiny hero, creature, or talisman lending aid to the protagonist in need.
With insight gained through this exploration, the webinar will further address topics related to acquiring and growing a Sandplay collection including recommended categories of miniatures, sources, “must haves”, “don’t haves”, care & tending, issues of quantity, quality, aesthetics, and more. Also included will be discussion about the psychology of collecting, what it means for the therapist, and when the collection is offered for use, how this “lending of self” impacts the therapeutic transference.
Registration fee: Single webinar – $115; Spring 2021 series of 4 webinars – $425
