Sandplay is a powerful yet gentle depth psychotherapy method that heals nonverbal or preverbal trauma in both children and adults, thereby promoting healing. This course provides a practical, experiential and theoretical introduction to the concept of relational fields in sandplay therapy, including Jungian theory and trauma theory. Through knowledge and experience of these fields, the sandplay therapist is better able to identify trauma and to deepen the capacity for holding deep wounds to the psyche.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Define complex trauma
- Describe how sandplay can be useful in treating complex trauma
- Name the four archetypal relational fields
- Discuss one or two qualities of each of the Four Relational Fields
- Explain some qualities of sandplay images found in each relational field
- Describe a countertransference experience with one of your clients
- Apply relational fields theory to your work with patients who have early relational trauma
- Describe the role of mindfulness in sandplay therapy

Linda Cunningham, Ph.D., MFT is a Certified Teaching Member of STA/ ISST. She is the author of Sandplay and the Clinical Relationship (2013) as well as Relational Sandplay Therapy (2005). She has presented at both national and international conferences, and has taught sandplay as well as contemporary relational theories for over twenty years in both graduate and postgraduate settings. For many years, she was adjunct faculty in the Sonoma State University M.A. Depth Psychology Program and at the California Institute of Integral Studies. Linda offers trainings and workshops in sandplay, Jungian and relational theory throughout the year in San Francisco, CA and Gig Harbor, WA.
