Sand & Water – Encountering the Elements in Sandplay

Webinar via Zoom

Date and Time: Saturday 4/2/2021 9:00 AM – 12:15 PM, MST

Presenter: Betty Jackson, LMSW, CST-T in collaboration with the Colorado Sandplay Therapy Association

Brief description of the event:
“Watch kids digging at the beach, their concentration and intimacy with their material. Scooping, scraping, molding, patting, sculpting, repairing, they are lost in the cycles of excavation, construction, and destruction.” Michael Welland, author of Sand – The Never-Ending Story

Sand and water, for so many, evoke memories of the beach, of time spent walking the shoreline, of being lulled into a relaxed, reflective state in this timeless in between space where earth and ocean meet. This webinar will focus on the elements of sand and water, including practical aspects as materials offered for play, clinical significance as natural, foundational substances, and symbolic meaning as primordial elements associated with creation. The fluidity of water, symbolic of the flow of feelings, especially the more watery emotions of grief and sadness will be examined. The liminality of sand, associated with threshold experiences of transition and change will be elucidated. Sandplay case material featuring work with these elemental substances alone will be shared.
