Workshop in Dallas April 27, 2013
Texas Sandplay Society sponsors workshop in Dallas, Texas
Jung’s Concept of Self and How it Appears in Sandplay
Presented by Lauren Cunningham
Saturday, April 27, 2013
9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
At: St. Thomas Episcopal Church
6525 Inwood at Mockingbird
Dallas, Texas
In this day long workshop we'll explore Jung's concept of the
Self along with Fordham's idea of a primal Self that
deintegrates and integrates from birth and promotes ego
development. Images from sandplay will be used as examples of
manifestations of this central archetype in Jung's psychology. A
symbol of the Self that’s close to its numinous center and
encompasses a spirit of wholeness of the psyche may be
recognized by intense emotion or a stillness in the psyche-somas
of the therapist and client. The intensity or stillness itself
is a hallmark of the closeness to the vitality of the archetypal
center of the psyche grounded in the body. This can be filled
with terror and darkness as in Job’s shattering experience of
god, or with awe or love and union of the opposites in an
experience of wholeness. Symbols in sandplay can also be
disordered and chaotic, experienced more as an underlying force
or energy that comes through and animates the images that
appear.
Jung wrote in Psychology of the Child Archetype:
“The symbols of the self arise in the depths of the body, and
they express its materiality every bit as much as the perceiving
consciousness. The symbol is thus a living body.”
("The Psychology of the Child Archetype" in CW 9/1, par 291).
Vignettes of children and adults will illustrate how the Self is
present as an underlying force and influence in the unconscious
that helps move or shape what’s created in the sand.
Lauren Cunningham, LCSW, Analyst Member of the Jung Institute
of San Francisco, is a founding member of Sandplay Therapists of
America. Her analytic practice with children and adults is in
San Francisco. She is the founding and past editor of Journal of
Sandplay Therapy. She teaches sandplay nationally and
internationally and is an associate professor at California
Institute of Integral Studies.

Morning Session: “Here be Dragons!” An introduction to
Understanding Differing Approaches to Mapping the Sandplay
Journey
Ancient maps delineated the outlines of the known world,
heralding the unexplored by the words: “Here be Dragons!” We
begin by exploring the various approaches to understanding and
mapping the Sandplay Journey through the lens of Joseph
Campbell’s mythic Hero’s Journey, Murdock’s Heroine’s Journey
and Heiko’s Sandplay Journey Map, based upon Campbell, Sandplay
Teacher Betty Jackson, and the Clifts’ Hero’s Journey in Dreams.
Sandplay therapists in training have always been vitally
concerned with where their clients’ work was progressing in this
cycle. The Sandplay Journey Map continues to refine this journey
model by explaining these stages in a way that is simple and
elegant. This practical method of scrutinizing the client’s work
in the sand deeply enriches and illuminates our perspective on
our clients’ struggles.
This presentation will cover the various ways to approach
understanding the stages of the Sandplay Journey through case
presentation, discussion and shared experiences. As the saying
goes, “Anyone can plant a seed, but only a farmer can make it
grow.” This workshop will help therapists cultivate their
understanding of this complex process of Sandplay practice.
Afternoon Session: The Burning Bowl: Using Fire Directly and
Symbolically in Play Therapy and Sandplay
The workshop illuminates responsible use of fire and symbolic
representation of the element in play therapy and sandplay
through video, case presentation, discussion and an experiential
format. Specific use of the Burning Bowl will be highlighted.

The Elements, the Archetypes and the Self (San Francisco/Bay
Area, CA)
Fall
2011, Winter 2012 and Spring 2012 – 3 weekend retreats TBA,
Friday - Sunday
The four elements in nature move in a circular process that
we experience in the seasons and phases of the moon. In sandplay
archetypal images that reflect the unfolding Self in the
individuation process also circle around as we move through the
ages and stages of life. Ancient practices, from both East and
West, work to bring the four elements into a balance and flow,
promoting the healing of the body, mind and spirit. Sandplay,
like Navaho sand painting, provides us with such a practice.
Through experiential work, theoretical and sandplay case
material we will learn how the elements manifest and transform
as the psyche works to create balance and flow. This process of
alchemical transformation of the elements forms one of core
aspects of sandplay, connecting our present work to ancient
healing practices as well as to the practice of alchemy in the
21st century.
This course is intended for therapists who are currently
using sandplay in their psychotherapeutic practice, who have had
introductory level courses in sandplay, and have experienced a
personal sandplay process. The purpose of this course is to
deepen clinicians’ psychotherapeutic work by understanding and
experiencing how the elements, the archetypes and the Self guide
transformation of the psyche in sandplay.
Tuition for three weekends is $350 per weekend plus
residential fees TBA. CEU’s available for MFC, LCSW.
Psychologists pending. (30 hours for year’s seminar)

Symbolic Process in Sandplay Therapy (Bayside, CA)
Saturday, March 31, 2012, 9:30-4:30
This six-hour Fundamentals of Sandplay course will focus on
symbolic process and its relevance to Sandplay Therapy. We’ll
explore a cluster of symbols relating to centering and
circulating. Such symbols are commonly seen in sandplay
representing psychological change. Images of circles, spheres,
spirals, mandalas will be illustrated through Sandplay of both
adults and children. Theoretical material will be presented on
the difference between symbol and sign, visual vs. material
(body) symbol, and the manner of interpretation of symbols.
There will also be several experiential opportunities to amplify
your understanding of the use of symbols.
