The Enchantment of Gardens: A Psychological Approach
By Ruth Ammann
Translated from the German by Mark Kyburz and John Peck

BOOKREVIEW
Reviewed by Lee Roloff
Seattle, Washington

Volume 18, Number 1
Ruth Ammann’s, The Enchantment of Gardens, is a wondrous efflorescence of Stanley Kunitz’s observation above. In eight tightly wrought chapter essays, Ammann explores this “driving energy to live — to grow, to bear fruit.” Moreover, for Ammann gardens become living metaphors of “the range of human experience” with the two sets of eyes Ammann identifies: the outer eyes and the inner eyes, those that gaze upon the world and those that gaze into the realm of psyche and memory. As an architect, analyst, and an internationally recognized sandplay therapist, she orchestrates the duple vision with precision and eloquence.

Sandplay and the Psyche: Inner Landscapes and Outer Realities
By Brenda Weinberg and Nehama Baum, Eds.

BOOKREVIEW
Reviewed by Jill Kaplan
Menlo Park, California

Volume 18, Number 1
Sandplay and the Psyche: Inner Landscapes and Outer Realities, edited by Brenda Weinberg and Nehama Baum, had its origins in the 2003 isst conference in Seattle, Washington. Weinberg and Baum have gathered writings, many from Canadian sandplay therapists, on the theme of landscape and how it is used and reflected in sandplay process. In one of the articles most closely related to their theme, Lenore Steinhardt writes of the influence of landscape and geography on her therapy clients in Israel. She first looks at the use of beach and sand in its natural environment: sand structures and deep holes, sculptures in the sand. She considers how such structures may reflect the local geography and culture, and goes on to consider several uses of the beach landscape in sandplay processes.
