THE SAN DAMIANO CRUCIFIX IN SANDPLAY: INVITATION TO INDIVIDUATION

ABSTRACT: The religious history and symbolism of the San Damiano crucifix is described in this article in relationship to Francis Bernardone, known as Francis of Assisi. The significance of this cross in the sandplay work of three individuals in shared. In previous descriptions of the use of the cross in sandplay, it has been suggested that the cross was found later in the process. These three cases indicate early use, suggesting incorporation into the initiation of the process of individuation. The article also points out the significance of this symbol for expression of the numinous for Western Christian clients. The multidimensional aspects of the use of the cross is presented.
